Individual Stableford: The Points Table and Why It Speeds Up Play
Quick answer: Stableford awards points on each hole based on your net score against par. The floor is zero, so a wrecked hole costs you that hole and nothing else. Highest points total wins — in Stableford, high is good.
How it works
- Work out your net score on the hole after handicap strokes.
- Convert it to points against par.
- Add the points across 18 holes. Highest wins.
Scoring
The standard table, against your net score:
- Double bogey or worse — zero points
- Bogey — one point
- Par — two points
- Birdie — three points
- Eagle — four points
- Albatross — five points
Thirty-six points is a net par round, and it is the number everyone measures themselves against.
When to play it on a golf trip
Stableford is the format to reach for on the longest, hardest course of the weekend, and on any round where you are worried about pace. The moment a player cannot score, they pick up — which removes the slowest minutes of any round.
It also rewards going for it. A birdie is worth three times a bogey, so the risky line over the water is properly priced for once.
House rules worth agreeing first
- That picking up is expected, not rude, once zero is certain.
- Whether points come off full handicap or a reduced allowance.
- Whether Stableford points or net strokes decide the overall trip if both are running.
